SOME GOOD NEWS

He can read but only certain books!

He can read but only certain books!

Here’s a happy blog to share during a time when good news is scant.

The Brothers Trust is about to send a cheque to Anthony Nolan for £6,000 – proceeds from the recent sale of Open Links – the novel I wrote for the charity and recently republished.

We read too few books these days. Me included so don’t take that as a criticism. Just a sign of the times; living in the age of the meme, tweet and now something called Tik Tok which as yet has not past my sensory guards.

I used to have a line in my stand-up…

There is no greater feeling than getting in to a bed at home with clean linen…

…but if this is the case, then why don’t we do it more often?

The same can be said about reading a great book. Losing oneself in a great and compelling story is one of life’s great pleasures. Not that I would make such a claim for any of my books but – if Open Links is anywhere near as much fun to read as it was to write, then I can confidently commend it to you.

A worthy read, even without considering the consequences of your support.

Because ALL the proceeds from every sales of Open Links goes to Anthony Nolan to enable them to expand their life saving bone marrow register.

Theirs is a pretty simple equation.

People with blood disorders, most typically leukaemia will ultimately require a bone marrow transplant – and for this, they will turn to Anthony Nolan in the hope that they have a tissue match for them.

Approximately, every four copies of Open Links that we sell via our site will pay for a new tissue donor to be registered. At a Comic Con recently in London, The Brothers Trust had a stand where we raffled memorabilia as well as sold copies of Eclipsed and Open Links for our charity – and it felt appropriate that Anthony Nolan had a stand also, to try and attract new donors on to their register.

Ideally, we would sell Open Links on line but because the retailers we approached would not waive their considerable margins, we are confined for the moment to publish, print, process and dispatch ourselves.

This is a little onerous but it does have its upsides. Copies are printed in London by a family owned firm and dispatched by our local Post Office, for whom The Brothers Trust is their number one customer. And also, because it allows us to feel a connection with our supporters and you are able to receive signed copies.

And now is an appropriate time for such an initiative. All of us take our good health for granted, something that is laid-bare by this Corona crisis that has enveloped us all. The Postal service in the UK is resuming tomorrow, enabling us to begin sending merchandise again and so your chance to rekindle the reading habit and to help a stranger in the process.

Our recent print run has put approximately 125 more donors on to the register and we would love this number to grow further.

Thank you if you have already supported Open Links. If you feel inclined, please leave a review on this site and/or www.dominicholland.co.uk

God willing, one day, someone, somewhere with blood cancer will be tissue matched and they can reclaim their life.

Like I said at the beginning – a good news story.

Thank you for sharing it.
