If you have followed The Brothers Trust for any length of time, you will be familiar with Debra, the charity leading the charge against EB – which is an unimaginable condition to live with.
James Dunn, was a hero we all enjoyed getting to know and he did a remarkable job in his short life for Debra highlighting his plight and the help that is needed.
Charities need sufferers like James to shout about the cause – so step forward young Mason White who lives in Bournemouth on the south coast of England.
Mason is 11 years old. He has the same variety of EB that James had. His skin is so delicate, his oesophagus ruptured, so Mason is fed via a tube directly into his stomach. Mason has never eaten anything in the normal way and lives in constant pain. Tom and I first met him at a hotel in London and he strengthened our resolve to help Debra and the sufferers of this wretched condition.
During lockdown, Mason has been inspired by the people doing all sorts of endeavours for charity, including the infamous Major Tom – who is now Sir Tom for his remarkable achievements.
And Mason conceived a series of daily challenges for himself pertaining to his first love of boxing; to raise awareness of EB and funds for Debra. Jimmy Kimmel kindly donated $10,000 dollars to our trust for Tom’s appearance on his show – which we promptly passed on to Mason’s appeal – and we know was a great tonic to this remarkable young man. His fortitude and constant smile is something to behold. At the Spies in Disguise event, he was obviously in some pain and yet his smile remained throughout.
Included here are some clips of his challenges – which I daresay are incredibly uncomfortable and painful for him to complete. But worth it for the distraction they provide him with and no doubt seeing his total creep inexorably upwards – with vital funds that will help his fellow sufferers.
